Investors are always interested in what the "smart money" hedge fund managers are investing in. On a quarterly basis we're treated to a look at the stocks they hold in their portfolios at quarter end through their 13F filings with the SEC. But it's often difficult to gauge how those stocks are performing. On the theory that a picture is worth a thousand words, we've taken some of the guess work out of it by providing charts of some of the largest hedge funds' (and the occasional non-hedge funds') reported stock holdings.
Caveat emptor: Keep in mind that the 13F holdings are just an end of quarter snapshot, so the stocks in those filings aren't necessarily what the funds currently own -- there could have been major portfolio changes since then. In addition, the 13Fs don't disclose short positions, or any hedging vehicles like options or other derivatives. And they also don't include debt. In short, the 13F's show just a piece of the quarter end portfolio weeks before the filing date.
Also, for some very large hedge funds we may show only a portion of their portfolio, generally the top 250 or so.
