The New York Stock Exchange played Scrooge, and handed out pink slips as presents yesterday, to 60 unlucky clerical workers, only two weeks before Christmas.
The Big Board showed little mercy in releasing the staffers, all long-time clerical workers far removed from the multi-million dollar pay realm of the Big Board's sixth-floor executive suite.
"The [NYSE] confiscated their badges and escorted them from either their offices or the floor — like they were criminals," said one infuriated floor broker who witnessed the firings.
Hit hardest were NYSE stalwarts like the bathroom and coat check attendants, for whom the Christmas season brings in a slew of crucial end-of-year tips from floor brokers.
Way to go Mr. Thain. BAH HUMBUG!
