We knew something was up early in the morning on 9/11/2001 when we heard sirens start. From the number of them it was obvious that something really, really bad had happened downtown. And then CNBC said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center; they showed the gaping hole. In disbelief, with a northern skyline view from our office a couple of miles north of the WTC, we ran up to the roof to look downtown for ourselves. And it was truly unbelievable. Plumes of smoke to the south. And a beautiful crystal clear day to the north. We were on the roof where more people from the building had gathered when the second plane hit and it became instantly clear that it was no accident as had been speculated in the confusion of the first hit. We looked north and braced ourselves for the Empire State building to be next. Thankfully, that never happened. We were also there on the roof to see both towers horrifically collapse. Everyone was just completely numb. The sooty air and stench lasted for weeks. But the awful memories of seeing those events real time will last a lifetime.
